Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison criticized Governor Rick Perry in a speech to the local Republican Jewish Coalition this afternoon, claiming Texas has the country’s highest property taxes, an education system with the worst dropout rate in the nation and a government growing faster than the federal government with more than…
During the past 21 years, Larry Covington has seen vacant lots morph into shops and homes at the intersection of Maple and Wycliff Avenues. For most of that time, he’s worked at or near this very spot — as a sandwich vendor, a foundation leveler, a custodian. These days, his…
Speaking of Dallas Area Rapid Transit and Fair Park …I was looking for something entirely unrelated on YouTube when I came across this vintage footage posted by DART a couple of weeks ago. Says the description of the footage that was kindly provided by one Johnnie J. Myers:Fair Park saw…
Developing. UPDATE: From what I know there were numerous contributing factors, such as Sean’s schedule and, yes, personality conflicts between him and management. I’ve talked to all parties involved and – sorry Deadspin – “sexting” wasn’t involved…
Mayor Tom Leppert and other city officials got their first ride on the much-anticipated Dallas Area Rapid Transit Green Line this morning. The first four stops on the $1.8 billion, 20-station, 28-mile line will officially open Monday — following tomorrow’s Super Saturday spectacular at the MLK Jr., Fair Park, Baylor…
You know why it seems like Angela Hunt’s always on Unfair Park? Because she’s the only council member with a regularly updated Web site to which she posts items of significance to Dallas residents. Hey, Carolyn Davis gets herself a blog, we’ll post the hell out of it; same for…
The Project Runway designers were worried: Heidi Klum was being all kinds of shady as she gave this week’s challenge. With her spritely German accent she mumbled something about 13 women, waiting in the the workroom, knowing what they wanted. It was terrifying.Oh, but it was just the models! What…
I only ask because the Dallas Zoological Society, which is now operating the Dallas Zoo, is auctioning off a date with Mayor Tom as part of its Zoo to Do 2009 Gone Wild! fund-raising event, which runs through September 30 — so act now! Let’s see what you get for…
First there was the irate woman, with long dark hair and a low-slung green tank-top; then, the hapless guy being loaded from the street into an ambulance. Between those two and host Joey Greco keeping his cool a few feet away, there was nothing about the display that hasn’t played…
Far as I knew, Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley were still hosting the Today show — apparently not. Nope, says this NBC press release, a couple of gentlemen named Matt Lauer (who I thought hosted HBO’s entertainment news segment) and Al Roker will bring the show to Arlington next week,…
So, let’s see … we’ve got those Victory Park shirts. That Leppert poster. Maybe a Schutze tee or two. Guess it’s time to open up an Unfair Park store, now that our very own Alexander Flores has taken our Friend Heywood U. Buzzoff’s suggestion and turned Angela Hunt’s “hell of…
As the Friends of Unfair Park can probably guess, there were two good reasons why we suffered through nearly four hours of a Dallas Independent School District board of trustees briefing today. The first: the fate of W. H. Adamson High School, whose historic main building district officials want to…
Speaking of the City Plan Commission …By all accounts, the 3-year-long battle over designating Northern Hills a conservation district’s about to come to an end. (Whassup, Disney streets?) Sources say that 80 percent of the residents in the 61-house neighborhood nestled between Highland Park and the Knox-Henderson shopping district have…
Speaking of vacant downtown buildings … When Mayor Tom Leppert unveiled his list of Central Business District buildings that needed to be brought up to code or else, preservationists fretted that he had his sights set on razing, oh, the Statler Hilton or 508 Park Avenue, for starters. It made…
I have no idea who or what Omega El Fuerte is. But if it’s good enough for Texas Rangers’ fireballin’ phenom Neftali Feliz, it’s good enough for me. When the ridiculous rookie enters a game over the weekend in a crucial series against the Seattle Mariners, he’ll be serenaded by…
Eleven months ago, Mayor Tom Leppert gathered the media beneath 1604 Main Street to detail his plan for dealing with 36 vacant buildings downtown. We’ve spilled plenty of virtual ink documenting the doings with two of the more high-profile properties, but this week comes news that a handful of smaller…
Dunno how we missed this one, but on her blog yesterday Angela Hunt took a long, hard look at City Manager Mary Suhm’s proposed FY 2009-2010 budget and wrote at great length about her most major concern: the pile of debt that would result from bond projects proposed in the…
Even if you’ve never heard of the Fan Cost Index, the name is pretty self-explanatory: It’s what a family of four could expect to spend at a sporting event, simple as that. Factored into the costs, per Team Marketing Index’s arguable equation: the price of two adult average price tickets,…
We caught up with Sheila Hill’s attorney, Victor Vital, after the cross-examination of Don Hill Wednesday afternoon in the City Hall corruption trial, to find out if he had any concerns about putting his client on the stand. “Oh, not at all,” he says. “Don did wonderfully today. The truth…
By now we’ve come to expect it from Dallas Cowboys’ larger-than-life owner Jerry Jones. The man does everything grande: Signings. Stadiums. Expectations. The works. He is, after all, Jumbo Jerry. So last week when he says “I have a hope and feel” that the Cowboys are good enough to win a Super…
First off, let’s settle the debate: His name is nef-tah-LEE. Second, let’s identify the pitch: It’s not his 100 mph fastball, it’s a 77 mph curveball. Last, let’s punctuate the speculation: His talent is as authentic as it is bountiful. No doubt about it, Neftali Feliz is the most mysterious,…
“A Bridge to Somewhere,” by Sam Merten, August 27 Too Much for Too Little It’s very hard to say anything negative about a pseudo-charitable organization, but I am able to force my way through it. I am more of a math guy: $7,000,000 in operating expenses this year…400 people helped…
