I wrote earlier that the candidates who finished fifth or lower will have to pull rabbits out of their hat to make the runoff. I stand corrected: Even if they possess incredible magical abilities, the likes of which would make David Blaine bury himself under the sidewalk in a block of ice with envy, they’re still done. As in, Gary Griffith, Darrell Jordan and Sam Coats are now, most likely, rowing upstream in the same leaky boat as Roger Herrera, Jennifer Gale and Edward Okpa, and it’s only 8:10 on Saturday night.

People I’m talking to say there’s almost no way Griffith and Jordan can make up the difference to make the runoff. Republicans typically fare better in early voting than Democrats, so it’s not as though Griffith and Jordan can expect a surge from today’s votes.

Meanwhile, Coats is far too behind — with only 1,482 votes — to climb his way into second place. So, to recap: Congratulations to Tom Leppert, you done good. Oakley, you’re almost there. Hill and Wells, you’re not dead yet. –Matt Pulle
