Well Dallas, we’ve lassoed in another one. Eugene McDermott Director of the Dallas Museum of Art, Maxwell Anderson, has brought his former collaborator and colleague, Robert Stein in to serve as the DMA’s new Deputy Director. The men first worked together at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2006, with the goal of making the museum one of the most technologically accessible and innovative in the country. They accomplished just that, and much of the success can be attributed to Stein’s work as Deputy Director for Research, Technology and Engagement.
It was in that role that Stein experimented, using his background in academic computer science to create the museum’s first program of digitization and online access for archival documents — a first for the 129 year-old institution. He went on to lead a cloud computing technology program called ArtBabble.org, that’s given people more access to artists and collections than nearly any other collaborative effort to date. It’s brought in contributions from 35 organizations, from the MoMA to the Van Gogh Museum, to create a user-friendly research tool for the masses.
