The weather may have given Dallas the finger right before the Super Bowl, but some high-profile restaurants, including The Cedars Social and Lockhart Smokehouse, were able to open in spite of ice, snow and Steelers fans. In January, we found out that Metro Diner will be closing its Gaston Avenue location after more than 40 years of serving fried eggs and coffee, and then Pegasus News announced on Friday that another Observer breakfast favorite, Taco Lounge (formerly Sol’s Taco Lounge), has shuttered its doors after 20 years of business. It’s not all bad news, as you’ll see in this month’s breakdown after the jump.
Restaurants Opening in February
Alma, 2822 Henderson Ave. — Tristan Simon’s new hot spot is serving dinner in the former Cuba Libre location and will open for brunch and lunch in late spring.
Komali, 4152 Cole Ave. — Abraham Salum’s long-awaited Mexican restaurant finally opened its doors in early February.
Il Cane Rosso, 2612 Commerce St. — Jay Jerrier is now slingin’ pizzas in Deep Ellum to hoards of hipsters and pie lovers.
Lockhart Smokehouse, 400 W. Davis St. — The wait is over. Get your fill of brisket and Kreuz Market sausage at the new Oak Cliff barbecue joint, but don’t expect to find any sauce. Or forks.
The Cedars Social, 1326 South Lamar – John Tesar’s latest venture is serving modern comfort food, so hopefully there’ll be a kicked-up version of Velveeta shells and cheese for us.
Restaurants Closing in February
The Green Room, 2715 Elm St. — Yep, folks, it’s official: Nancy Nichols is not a rumor monger, and the Deep Ellum restaurant has permanently turned off the lights.
Taco Lounge, 2626 Commerce St. — Another casualty in Deep Ellum, but there’s a glimmer of hope — the original owners still operate Sol’s Nieto in East Dallas.
Noteworthy Move
Morton’s The Steakhouse, 2222 McKinney Ave. — You’ll have to head to Uptown to get your fill of filet and porterhouse as the West End location is no more.

Dough — The popular San Antonio pizzeria is planning to open its first Dallas location at the corner of Preston and Forest sometime this year.
Heart Attack Grill — The Phoenix-based restaurant’s slogan is “Treating anorexia since 2005!” Their waitresses dress in naughty nurse uniforms. This is their website. Nuff said.
