A couple of notable press releases from the U.S. Attorney’s Office just landed in the Unfair Park in-box, the most recent of which has to do with a former Internal Revenue Service employee sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Sam A. Lindsay to 16 months in the federal hoosegow for taking a bribe. Maybe you recall, though you probably don’t: Back in October, 33-year-old Fernando Hernandez was at his desk in the Dallas I.R.S. office when FBI agents came in to arrest him — for taking a $2,000 bribe from taxpayer in exchange for the promise that, nosiree, no way no how would he get audited. Hernandez got the max sentence: Said Lindsey, when a taxman will accept a bribe, why, it “breeds contempt and disrespect for the I.R.S, as well as law enforcement, generally.” …
As opposed to this, also just in from the U.S. Attorney? Lindsay also sentenced to prison today 59-year-old James Robert Clayton of Mesquite, who’s getting 10 years for possessing child pornography, including “images [that] depicted prepubescent children as well as sadistic or masochistic conduct,” according to the press release. The U.S. Attorney sends a handful of these disturbing notices almost every day. But this one’s different: According to the feds, “Clayton was a police officer with the Highland Park Police Department from September 1973 to July 1978 and an officer with the Plano Police Department from 1979 to February 2004.”
