Those looking for a way to start the weekend early–especially those with a proclivity for Americana–can do so at a variety of local establishments tonight.

Aside from the much-heralded Lucinda Williams kicking up her heels at the House of Blues this evening, you can also catch Austinite Jason Allen at Poor David’s Pub, or Tommy Alverson at The Fairmount in Fort Worth.

For those unfamiliar with Allen’s work, his most recent effort, Twilight Zone, contains a killer, honky-tonk cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You”, along with some equally solid originals.

Alverson, meanwhile, has been around for ages. But his brand of hardcore country just seems to get better each outing. He’s shared the stage with Texas legends Willie Nelson, Gary P. Nunn, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Radney Foster, Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Charlie Robison, Cory Morrow, Dale Watson, and Jim Lauderdale. The title of Alverson’s most recent effort, Country to the Bone, tells you everything you need to know.

Oh, also in Cowtown tonight? Kansas City’s The Dewayn Brothers. Featuring the mighty voice of Sweet Jamie Lee, the Brothers’ brand of progressive bluegrass is just the type of thing to get those hayseeds at Lola’s Stockyard Saloon to hoist a few cold ones.

Ex-South Austin Jug Band member James Hyland also plays tonight, at Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton.

And, as if that weren’t enough, local roots rock act Dove Hunter plays a free gig at Vickery Park, too.

There are months where our area doesn’t see the kind of Americana talent that the region’s boasting tonight, folks. Enjoy.
