Just got off the phone with Will Johnson a few minutes ago for an upcoming story related to the upcoming, pretty epic-looking Dallas Observer Music Awards Showcase. He’s a good dude — you may recall his, Centro-matic and South San Gabriel’s efforts a few weeks back to do what they could to help relieve the situation brought on by the wildfires down in Bastrop.
He and his Centro-matic gang are hardly the only musicians lending a helping hand to Bastrop and its surrounding areas these days, though. Tomorrow at noon, tickets will go on sale for a benefit concert to take place at the Frank Erwin Center at the University of Texas down in Austin; this time around, the money will head to the Central Texas Wildfire Fund at the Austin Community Foundation, which hopes to cut into thew nearly $250 million in damages brought on by the fires.
A number of prominent Texans — “a history of Texas music,” Wilonsky says — will be participating in the Monday, October 17, event, which is to be called “Fire Relief: The Concert for Central Texas” and for which tickets will run anywhere between $25 and $250. Unsurprisingly, some of them have local ties — like, say, the Dixie Chicks and their offshoot, the Court Yard Hounds.
Joining Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Robison atop the bill will be Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett and Asleep at the Wheel. The undercard is impressive, too: Eric Johnson, Steve Miller (Woodrow Wilson High School, represent!), Joe Satrian, Shawn Colvin and the Texas Tornados are all slated to perform; nonprofit guru and filmmaker Turk Pipkin will emcee along with Kyle Chandler (also known as Coach Taylor).
