As The New York Times reported this week, Mexico’s in a dour mood on the eve of its bicentennial: An increasingly brutal drug war has dampened citizens’ enthusiasm for Thursday’s celebration.
But nothing’s stopping the party at local Mexican burger chain Burguesa Burger, which plans to roll out two new permanent menu items on Mexican Independence Day.
Burguesa is adding Sonoran hot dogs — described as “bacon-wrapped franks stuffed inside a toasted bun and topped with grilled tomatoes, onions, jalapeños” and “Burguesa’s creamy special sauce” — to its menu on September 16 The first 200 customers at each of the store’s four outlets get a dog for free. Spokesperson Jennifer Chininis suggests customers with bigger appetites consider wearing a sombrero, since Mexican-hatted guests also qualify for a free lunch combo.
Hot dogs will be available at all Burguesa locations, but only the Inwood Road store’s putting sno-cones on its menu. Come September 16 (or sooner), the restaurant will begin serving an array of sno-cones, elotes and Mexican coffee from an adjoining stand.

“We’re just awaiting final menu signage, and then it’ll be open for biz,” Chininis writes. “But I consider the Mexican Independence Day celebration the ‘grand opening’ of the sno-cone shack.”
