As you may have noticed, much of the music section in this week’s Observer is dedicated to the cause of counting down the 20 best local releases of 2010. Next week’s issue, meanwhile, will heavily focus on the most anticipated releases of 2011.
And few bands pop up on both lists, actually — including Mind Spiders, the new project from former Marked Men co-forntman Mark Ryan.
After releasing his band’s self-titled EP this summer, Ryan and the Portland-based label that has released much of his music (both as Marked Men and Mind Spiders) are planning on turning the band’s self-titled full-length around in the next few weeks. The disc is currently slated for a January 25 release.
Needless to say, we here at DC9 are excited for it: What we’ve already been able to hear off of the new album promises more of the same smart, wall-of-sound garage punk that Ryan and his backing players (which features members of Marked Men, Bad Sports, VIDEO, High tension Wires and The Uptown Bums) showcased so well on their debut, self-produced EP.

And, thanks to the folks at Dirtnap, we’ve been given permission to pass along an early taste of the new disc to DC9 readers. Give “No Romance” a much-deserved download after the jump.
A little reminiscent of Wavves, yeah? Maybe better than Wavves, actually.
At just 103 seconds long, the song’s a quick blast to your eardrums — and quite the enjoyable one at that. Ryan has never needed much time to make his point on record, and this song is no different.
Here’s looking forward to the full-length.
