*For all the Mavs’ fascination and obsession with beating the Lakers, the teams haven’t met in the playoffs in 23 years. It was 1988 when the Mavs — led by Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Roy Tarpley — pushed the eventual champs to a Game 7 at The Forum. Bad result, but good times.
*Sad to see Newy Scruggs leave 105.3 The Fan. He was my first full-time radio partner and I learned so much from him during our 9-month on-air marriage. His last show is this morning 9-11. Knowing Newy, there won’t be any Mike Snyder-Jane McGarry “I love you” good-byes. Starting Monday New School with Shan and RJ will expand 5:30-10 and Josh ‘n Elf will go 10 a.m.-2 p.m., leading into yours truly with Greggo.
*If you’re a fan of UFC, you’re a fan of The Fan. In the last week we’ve had on Jon “Bones” Jones and Georges St. Pierre and tomorrow night Richard Hunter will host a UFC 129 pre-game show 7-8.
*Good Perfect time for the draft and the Mavs to bury your Rangers, because things aren’t good. Another bullpen oops by yesterday Darren Oliver — aided by neutered hitting and a rare Adrian Beltre fielding gaffe — and all the sudden Texas has lost four of its last five series.

*By the way, happy birthday to you. Sorta. On Sunday this lil’ corner of the blogosphere turns 3. Seems like just yesterday we were just learning to crawl.
*Smith is a good pick and all, but the Cowboys still have holes to address in today’s second round and third rounds. Namely, safety. But when Jerry Jones said late last night that Dallas tried to move into the first round to grab a player, the target was Cal defensive end Cameron Jordan.
*Not even remotely interested in the Royal Wedding. Give me Obama vs. Birthers all day, but all that overseas pomp ‘n circumstance smacks of a parade on creatine. No thanks.
*When the Mavs’ 75-58 lead dissolved to 86-85 after a Gerald Wallace steal-n-dunk in last night’s fourth quarter, the entire Metroplex was thinking “Oh shit, not again.” I’d like to say the Mavs learned from Game 4 and handled things totally differently — with more maturity — than last weekend. But the truth is that in Game 6 Jason Kidd simply made a huge 3-pointer and Jason Terry sank a long jumper that pushed the lead back to six and restored order. Die by the jumper, advance by the jumper.
*Since it’s temporarily back to business today at Valley Ranch, Jones says he’ll sit down and talk to receiver Dez Bryant. Hmm, wonder what about?
*If Caron Butler were healthy I’d have a different opinion on Lakers-Mavs, but he ain’t. He might, however, show up soon in a layup line.
* … $415.24. After tip the tab was more than $500. For a cheap dork accustomed to eating the free media grub at AAC it was, um, enlightening.
*I’d say last night’s close-out win in Portland was the Mavs’ biggest, most important victory in exactly two years — since winning Game 5 in San Antonio in 2009.
*This weekend? Busy Saturday, and you’re invited. After some golf in the a.m. I’ll be at Vandergriff Honda in Arlington 3-5 and then Baby Dolls Dallas 9-midnight watching UFC 129 … and other things. Those of you who call me a midget and/or asshole or even you friendly types, come see for yourself. I’m actually taller than 4-11 and I’m generally in a good mood. Shake a hand. Trade a story. Let me buy you a beer (but probably not a new car.) I’ve met lots of Sportatorium readers and Fan listeners out at events and most leave realizing I’m not nearly as big of a jerk as the one I play in print or on radio. Above all other weekends, don’t be a stranger.
