Texas Rangers outfielder Engel Beltre fractured his tibia. Catcher Geovany Soto tore his meniscus. First baseman Prince Fielder required neck surgery. And those are just a few examples of the Rangers’ injuries woes. With starting first baseman Mitch Moreland having surgery on his ankle Wednesday, the team has had a total of 20 players catch the injury bug.
That in mind, there’s no time like the future. As in prospect Joey Gallo, who blasted a walk-off home run Monday night in his first Double-A game for the Frisco RoughRiders.
The 20-year-old Gallo, though, seems to be used to that sort of thing. According to MLB.com, he set the Nevada high school record for home runs, broke the Arizona Rookie League’s single-season record in 2012 and led the Minor Leagues with 40 HRs last year. Gallo told ESPN.com that he knew before he stepped to the plate that he was going to hit one out.
