The Dallas Video Festival, now in its 24th year, makes it bow September 21 with a screening of Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme at the Texas Theatre, which will be immediately followed by a sequel of sorts to Richard Linklater’s Slacker. The full schedule’s here, and, of course, we’ll have more in coming days, here and on The Mixmaster and in the actual print product.
But high on our to-see list are the two short docs being prepped by one James “Big Bucks” Burnett, who, for as long as I can recall, has been working on his films about the eight-track tape and Tiny Tim, who Bucks brought to the Bronco Bowl in the summer of 1984 for the infamous Edstock wingding that also featured Joe Ely and T Bone Burnett. They would become the best of friends, so much so Bucks displays Tiny Tim’s dental mold at his Eight-Track Museum.
In the wee small hours of this morning, Bucks was kind enough to send along the video you see above: the “single,” as he calls it, from Spinal Tape: A Trackumentary, which will screen at Hyena’s Comedy Club on September 25 and also features chats with the likes of Jimmy Page and the Talking Heads. After that premieres, you’ll be able to witness Tiny Tim: One Man Parade. Writes Bucks about this particular clip shot in Denton in ’96, “This was the last time I saw him, five months before he died. It was a great visit, and no one prompted him — he just grabbed the tracks and put them by his head. When he did that, I nearly dropped the camera!” Dig in.
