Texas Department of Public Safety director Steven McCraw does not have a sense of whimsy.

Emails obtained by an attorney representing a state trooper reprimanded for taking a photo with Snoop Dogg at South by Southwest show that McCraw was both hellbent on finding the trooper and has a really low opinion of Snoop Dogg.

McGraw is probably an emo guy.

“Apparently he would rather work the convention while on a week’s vacation to earn additional money rather than take an additional tour on the border. He must not understand that he was being lampooned by a dope smoking cop hater which reflects very poorly upon the Department,” McCraw says in a March 22 email about state Trooper Billy Spears.

Spears was working South by Southwest in Austin when Snoop Dogg, who was a keynote speaker at the conference, asked the trooper to take a photo with him. Spears agreed, setting off a controversy that would lead to his being forced to undergo counseling at McCraw’s behest.

“[T]he Director wants Billy Spears to receive a counseling record for poor judgement for allowing “Snoop dog” a known drug user and felon for allowing his picture to be taken with him,” regional commander Jack Webster said in an email sent the day after McCraw’s. “Apparently the boss was pissed over this, [he] wanted to cancel his secondary employment.”

Spears sued the department over the reprimand late last month.
