Think SMU hasn’t produced a decent NBA player since, oh, Jon Koncak? Don’t sell that load of Peruna droppings to the league’s two-time MVP. That’s because Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash is getting his mane all tangled up in a former Mustang named Quinton Ross. In Thursday night’s Game 6 of the Suns-L.A. Clippers Western Conference Semifinals, for example, Ross consistently posted up the smaller Nash and totally embarrassed him to the tune of a career high 18 points.

Of course, don’t blame Nash for not seeing it coming. Folks in Ross’ own backyard are shocked by his superlatives. After an all-state career at Kimball High School, Ross went to SMU and finished as the school’s fourth all-time leading scorer. He was the 2003 WAC Player of the Year, but got only nibbles at the next level. His hoop dreams detoured to a year in Belgium before the Clippers signed him as a free agent before the season. Suddenly, everyone knows his name. Right, Steve? –Richie Whitt
