Last month, as you no doubt recall, 23-year-old Kasey McKenzie was killed in the parking lot of the Spearmint Rhino, just off Walnut Hill Lane and Stemmons Freeway. McKenzie, who was at the club for a party with some friends, was run down by Eric Brent Crutchfield, who was behind the wheel of that mammoth monster truck — a Ford F-250 lifted several feet above the ground, so much so he said he couldn’t see the 23-year-old as she walked across the strip club’s parking lot at 2:13 in the morning. Crutchfield ran her over, killing McKenzie at the scene. Police say the 27-year-old man, who was arrested and who later posted bond, was also very drunk.
Which is why, this morning, McKenzie’s parents filed suit in Dallas County District Court: They’re not only suing Crutchfield for killing their daughter, but they’re also taking on the Spearmint Rhino for allowing Crutchfield to leave without insisting he take “alternate transportation.” In a release sent this morning, attorney Michael Schmidt, who is representing the family, says, “Kasey’s parents have gone through a terrible ordeal that few families can imagine. Their daughter’s entire life was taken away in an instant because a strip bar wanted to sell as many drinks as possible and because someone decided to get behind the wheel when he obviously had been served far too many drinks.” The lawsuit follows.
