The Dallas Symphony Orchestra sends word this morning that the DSO’s heading to Carnegie Hall on May 11, where, as part of the first-ever Spring for Music fest, the orchestra will perform for the 11th time — its first with music director Jaap van Zweden. Says DSO President Bill Lively, “It is an honor for the Dallas Symphony to represent our city in New York as part of an innovative festival at the iconic Carnegie Hall.”
On the play list that night is Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky and librettist Gene Scheer’s August 4, 1964, the LBJ commission that world-premiered in Dallas on September 18, 2008, to great acclaim. The New York Times called it “a complex tribute to a complex man with a deeply divided legacy.”
But before its New York bow, Stucky and Scheer’s piece will be performed once more at the Meyerson Symphony Center — on May 6. Not only that, but it will be recorded for CD release. And you’re invited to the recording session: Tickets are now available for the low, low price of $20.
