Zebra Katz, the musical identity of artist Ojay Morgan, knows how to make an impression. “Ima Read,” his homage to New York vogue and ballroom culture, documented in the singular 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, has already caused some controversy, yet his minimalist approach only emphasizes his muse: the fiercest bunch of outsiders in NYC. Granted, without context, its chorus of “Ima read that bitch” may come across as misogynistic, but its translation means to verbally eviscerate someone, elevating shit-talking to art. Katz and sidekick Njena Redd Foxx are bringing their house to Dallas, alongside local DJ collective Track Meet, in the Rio Room basement. Start practicing your posing and your comebacks, son, because those basement parties are coming back.
