North Texas isn’t lacking for bands with somewhat out-there names. Some that immediately come to mind? Sextape, Dikes of Holland, Man Factory, Shaolin Death Squad, Fatty Lumpkin and Sky Eats Airplane, just to name a few. Surely there are others.
Regardless, finally, the region is getting some recognition for its talent on this front. It’s been a long time coming, really.
So, many thanks to the Friend of DC9 who passed along this morning this link to the A.V. Club’s feature on the silliest band names of the year, published this morning. All in all, “2010: The Year In Band Names” covers a lot of ground. For instance, did you know that there’s a band called The Fuck You Kiss My Asses? Because there is, and, now that I think about it, it just might be the best band name I’ve ever heard.
I’m not so sure I can say the same thing about the three area bands who made the A.V. Club’s list. But I will say this: Congratulations.

After the jump, check out the three acts honored by the piece, and the categories in which they were lumped.
- Sparklepussy Barbie finally got its due this year, earning a nod in the Vagina category, alongside such luminaries as Vagiant, Choice Cunts and V.A.G.
- Nervous Curtains, surprisingly enough, wasn’t nominated in the Vagina category, but rather the Nonsensical one, where it was listed beside such talents as Eine Kleine Chinmuzik, Piano Fondue, Sensible Nectar, Unicorn Basement, This Magazine Is Haunted, Why The Human Suit, Morning Teleportation, Do You Mean Australia? and My Dry Wet Mess.
- Lastly, Fever In The Funkhouse, after being around for years, was finally honored — and, of course, in the Funk category, where it was placed alongside the bands Funk Dirty, Acu-Funk-ture, Sophistafunk, Funkiphino, and Funktrek
Congrats to all of these bands for this high honor. What other area bands should have earned some nods?
