In this edition of This Week In Dallas Music History, we point you in the direction of a piece penned by former Observer music editor Zac Crain that ended up as the cover story back in 2001.
The subject of Crain’s lengthy story: The pop-rockin’ Chomsky, which appeared poised to get their shot at the national stage with the pending release of their album Onward Quirky Soldiers. Thanks to the success of their previous record, A Few Possible Selections for the Soundtrack of Your Life, and a fully grown fanbase in Dallas, the band had started to take their show on the road.
The results varied in each town. A Tuesday night show opening for of Montreal in Austin saw the band performing for a skimpy crowd of about 30. And a problem that plagued the band as they tried to make a name for themselves — nobody knew how to spell their name. When their out-of-town shows were advertised, Chomsky was often promoted as Chompsky or Chompski.
Regardless of the mishaps that a band faces when first starting out, Chomsky was excited about the future, which, as a high-water mark, would find the band performing a song on CBS’ The Late, Late Show With Craig Ferguson.
