Mike Love, the only original Beach Boy in the group touring under the band’s moniker, would be better named Mike Hate. He recently sued Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson for using the band’s sound and songs in his solo re-creation of the legendary Smile album, the irony of which would be hilarious if it wasn’t horrifying. This spirit grates up against the fun, fun, fun and intimations of a sweeter and more innocent time that a Beach Boys concert should elicit. But that innocence isn’t the only thing gone, as two of the Wilson brothers are dead, and Al Jardine has his own act. Sure, longtime Beach Boy auxiliary Bruce Johnston will be along, as well as a Cowsill (John), and they are certainly serviceable, so go if your nostalgia insists. It likely won’t suck–until they play “Kokomo,” anyway.
