You never know who you’ll be standing next to at a Tegan & Sara show. For more than a decade the Canadian-born duo has run the gamut of music styles, promotional methods and, in turn, fans.
You’ll probably run into a few stray teens from the local mall-punk set, primed to hear the pop-punk of Tegan & Sara’s 2004 breakthrough record, So Jealous. Take a few steps closer to the bar and you’ll find some older, tougher-looking women who probably caught the group at the 2000 Lilith Fair tour and haven’t since stopped listening to the lesbian-centric Under Feet Like Ours. Then, in various patches around the room, you’ll find hipsters still high from T&S’ most recent albums, The Con and Sainthood.
The fact that Tegan and Sara Quin are identical twin sisters—and are both openly gay and actively involved in the gay-rights movement—often steals the spotlight from the duo’s terrific pop songs. But, as those pop songs improve and change with each album, you’ll continue to run into more diverse people at their shows.
