What do you get when you combine the loose instrumentals of Tortoise with the discordant guitars of Fugazi? Ideally, a band that sounds better than Tank Tank. While perfectly listenable, the Denton quartet fills its debut EP with 18 minutes of random guitar riffs chained together with barely a common thread. The hodgepodge sound could shine with a crazy lead singer/screamer, but in its current state, 5 is an uninteresting collection of incomplete song ideas that don’t stand alone as instrumentals. If I want to hear college kids improvise generic, post-punk riffs, I’ll drive to Rubber Gloves on open-mike night.
