Swans’ February 2011 show at Mohawk remains one of the best shows I’ve seen in the last five years. Seeing Michael Gira and the rest of his retrofitted band warming up their engine again, after close to 15 years of inactivity, was a sight to behold. The slow-building, majestic volume of that show obliterated what might have been left of my hearing, but it was a glorious hour of witness. 2010’s My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope To the Sky is followed up by their new album, The Seer, which is much more “mellow” than, say, 1984’s Cop, but no less intense in its tantric evocations. The always-challenging Xiu Xiu support, touring behind their new Greg Saunier-produced album, Always.
