We just got word Shanghai 5, that odd, fun little torch-rock-twisted-burlesque band fronted by she-with-the-mind-bending-voice singer Amy Curnow, is prepping for a big ol’ political extravaganza. Tuesday, Sept. 25, the Dallas County Young Democrats will host a wing-ding with S5 headlining and the Kul opening. If you haven’t heard the latter, check it out. The band mixes soulful, sort of Lenny Kravitz-esque vocals with AC/DC-like guitar (minus, of course, the Kravitz douche factor).
Before the musical fun begins, you’ve gotta get your meat and potatoes, in the form of a talk from Kert Davies, a climate change expert who works for Greenpeace. Davies will speak about Project Hot Seat and the role Dallas-based Exxon Mobil has played in global warming. Sean Fitzgerald’s photos will also be on display. The event takes place at Hal Samples’ spot Space, 2814 Main St., in Deep Ellum, and starts at 6:30 p.m. Six bucks gets you in. And don’t worry—we’ll remind you closer to the date. — Jonanna Widner
