Is it fire? Is it hands? Is it hands caught in a fire? Yes.
Kind of a literal visual interpretation in this week’s winning entry, from local graphic designer Brian Cvejanovich, promoting the triple-bill of The Therals, Cymbals Eat Guitars and The Coathangers at the Granada on Sunday night. The word thermal implies heat, heat means fire, blah blah blah, fire goes on the poster.
Simple enough, I guess. But it works, for sure. And the employment of hands into the design adds to the overall appeal, looking, as we said before, like a chorus of folks trapped in a fire reaching for help. Given the Thermals’ punk rock appeal, that imagery works well enough, giving it a nice sense of appropriate urgency. Also: Hand-drawn text? Yes, please.
