Technically, this show’s still a week off from today, but listen: A show featuring the lo-fi, Cleveland-based power-poppers of Cloud Nothings, as well as performances from fast-rising locals Soviet and Sealion, at the awesome Deep Ellum DIY venue The Canton Co-Op gets announced — and for the low price of a suggested $3 donation — it’s cause for notice.
Plus, the poster, designed by Taylor McClure of Denton’s awesomely versatile Pan Ector Industries for show promoter Parade of Flesh, is pretty awesome, too.
Highlighted by a sad clown who doesn’t appear all too sure that what he’s promoting is really cool or not, the poster certainly gets across all the details pertinent to this show — the bands, the date, the time, the venue, the address, the cost, even the fact that it’s BYOB event. It’s kind of a mess in that regard, actually. This poster, let’s face it, has a very heavy text presence.
But it’s an endearing presence when coupled with the clown illustration, as he too looks fairly amiss, albeit intentionally. Together, the merging of text and illustration gives this poster a solid collective concept. The fact that it’s all clearly original work done by hand — the drawing of the clown, the lettering of the text — only adds to this sentiment.
