There was once a day when synth-y pop could be both polished and vaguely eerie, coated in scuzz but also featuring a metallic sheen: Early- and mid-career Cars come to mind—when the tepid soul of machine-based music found life and became dirty and somehow sexually threatening. Denton’s Parata follows this tradition, with vocals distorted just enough to make them fuzzy around the edges, most notably in their song “High-Dollar Whore.” Yet the crew can also rock it straight ahead, with piano snaking through herky-jerky rhythms and guitar-based smart-boy rock. Head! Heads! Heads! is the name of the band’s new disc, which will be released officially at this show.
