Often when I try to get others to listen to Pelican, the second I mention the word “instrumental” they bow out. I’m hoping some of you have continued reading. Pelican’s sound is sometimes ethereal, always heavy. Those who can handle longer instrumental songs will want to pick up the band’s opus The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw (my favorite Pelican disc). If you’re not ready for longer tunes, Pelican’s latest disc, City of Echoes, offers shorter, catchier songs that maintain the band’s signature. Get a taste of the band with this live video of the California band playing “March to the Sea.” Pelican will be playing 7 p.m. tonight at the Palladium with Thrice and Circa Survive. Tickets cost $17. — Chelsea Ide
