Keane never thought this day would come. For the past two years, Coldplay fans dealt with the long wait for third album X&Y by listening to Keane, the British trio that delivers heartsick pop about looking at the sky, wishing a lover were near, feeling sorry for oneself, et al. Now that the mega-hyped Coldplay album is out, Keane might worry that they’ll be forgotten, but they needn’t fret. Hopes and Fears, Keane’s debut, still sounds remarkably lovely in the shadow of X&Y, especially since it has fewer clichés in comparison. Like Keane singer Tom Chaplin, opener Regina Spektor plays piano, but her post-Tori Amos stuff is weirder than it is pretty.
