Driving to Denton on a Sunday night is a pain, I know, so thanks a shitload, Hailey’s, for giving people a reason to be late to work on Monday. Last time Montreal’s Islands came through Denton was when the members were part of the Unicorns; the 2004 show was a mess, but Islands’ breezy, semi-weird pop gets everything right that the Unicorns too-weird spaz-pop got wrong, so I’m optimistic about this performance. Opening is Oakland’s Why?, the folk-rap genius whose 2005 release Elephant Eyelash is a trippy, kaleidoscope look at what hip-hop can–and in some ways–should become.
