Split the Difference, the fourth album by trippy English roots-rockers Gomez, doesn’t feature much in the way of songs. Holed up in the studio with master producer Tchad Blake (of Los Lobos side project Latin Playboys), they seemed to have placed a bigger emphasis on texture than tune, tricking out their relaxed granola grooves with all manner of keyboard squelch, string whine and guitar grind. This doesn’t necessarily bode well for Thursday’s show, since, onstage, texture is often about as useful as wall-to-wall carpeting. But the band has the catalog to dip into, including a crackerjack Beatles cover that’s about as songful as songs get.
