With the recent and sad passing of Alex Chilton and Andy Hummel, two-thirds of the Big Star, it’s only proper to showcase a relatively new outfit that was heavily influenced by the legendary power pop band.
Enter The Dashing Suns, a chipper little quartet out of Oakland that just happens to be playing The Nightmare on Saturday night. The band’s debut full-length, Really Like You, came out in July and features a bevy of fine Big Star-influenced songs, including the optimistic indie pop of “Goodbye Bad Vibrations” and the heavier, darker “Future Thunder.”
The band’s even been kind enough to offer up the latter tune as a free mp3 for the readers of DC-9. Check it out after the jump.

Saturday night’s bill also features The BMG’s,
a funky foursome hailing from Memphis. The folks at The Nightmare were
still trying to add a local opener for this show, but have yet to secure
one. In any case, The Dashing Suns are definitely worth checking out.
