It’s always a great thing when the best band on a lengthy bill is not the headliner. One, you usually can get up front and check out the action. And, two, you might not have to stay out so late.
Of course, the shows start pretty early at The Prophet Bar, so perhaps that second thing won’t matter as much.
Anyhow, my favorite band on this tasty bill of punk tonight is Sacramento’s Trash Talk. In 2009, this energetic quartet released the single “East of Eden.” Besides being a killer slice of hardcore punk, the song featured Keith Morris, former leader of the classic American punk outfit The Circle Jerks. Morris also spent some time as singer for another legendary punk band, Black Flag. Talk about bringing in some instant hardcore credibility. Trash Talk’s second full-length effort, Eyes & Nines, should be out any day now.
But there are other treats on tonight’s bill.

Canada’s Alexisonfire has been nominated for several Juno Awards, and several of the band’s albums have achieved platinum certification. The music of Alexisonfire justifies the sales and the hype: In just under a decade, the band has shown solid growth, starting out as your slightly generic screamo band and evolving into a melodic beast capable of succeeding in a variety of genres.
Also playing tonight will be Michigan’s La Dispute and Boston’s Therefore I Am. Jordan Dreyer leads La Dispute in all sorts of interesting post punk directions. The band was listed in Alternative Press as one of “The 100 Bands You Need to Know.” Meanwhile, Alex Correia and the rest of Therefore I Am lean a little too close to emo for my taste, but the band is still capable of wooing a young audience that happens to get to the venue early.
