Leading up to our November 10 showcase, we’ll be getting you familiar with some of our Dallas Observer Music Awards nominees, either via past features we’ve done on them, or new ones. You can vote for your favorite acts, venues and more right here.

If there’s one thing all of our Best Song nominees have in common, it’s a hook. The heavy-lidded sample from A.Dd+’s “Shit Got Crazy,” the chanted tail-end of Mind Spiders’ “Wait For Us,” the hopscotch vocal melodies of the Colurs’ “Easy to Love,” the cascading glockenspiel of Daniel Hart’s “O Sangeeta” and the hand-clapped chorus of Oil Boom’s “The Great American Shakedown” all appropriate different elements of classic pop song structure, and draw you in with a circular melody or harmony.

Does a hook make a great song? Not always. I’ve decided an 11-minute hip-hop track is one of the year’s best, but in the case of our nominees, the hook is the linchpin. Take a listen below. Then vote, vote like nobody’s watching.
