Welcome the return of the legendary pool. Every kid with a fake ID in the ’50s knew that behind the padded red doors of The Vagabond Club, there was a glimmering turquoise swimming pool–what could have been more alluringly exotic? Greenville Avenue Country Club built a theme and a party around the pool. When Stubbs took the space, he filled the pool with sand to make a beer garden for his blues and barbecue joint. Then J. Pepe’s came in and made a cactus garden with folk art. The blue lagoon seemed a thing of the past. But this past March, J. Pepe’s new owner, Gabe Munoz, started to excavate the pool, and now it’s refilled with bright blue water. They’ve furnished the patio and strung it with lights; they’ve hired lifeguards to be waiters. Grab a margarita–welcome to the beach.
