We love Angry Dog for the burgers, the nachos, the dogs and much more, and now have yet another reason to frequent the Deep Ellum greasy spoon and bar. For the entire month of September, Angry Dog will donate 50 cents to local charities each time it sells one of its top 20 food items.

The fund-raising effort, “20 Years of Beers,” is the Dog’s way of celebrating being in business for that long. It’s the first such event of its kind for the bar.

“We’ve done done some fairly small fund-raisers, hosted them, but not sponsored one on our own,” says co-owner John Little. “We figured after 20 years, it was about time.”

The effort kicked off Wednesday night with a $20-per-person party, which raised just over $2,000 in spite of the torrential rains, Little said. He’s hoping to raise at least $10,000 by the end of the month, so as to offer at least $2,500 to each of the four local charities, among which funds will be distributed equally.

Those charities are The Stewpot (which feeds homeless and needy people), Paws In The City (a volunteer no-kill animal rescue group), ArtLoveMagic (a collaborative artists’ group) and Children’s Cancer Fund (which raises money for pediatric cancer research; Little’s daughter is a cancer survivor, and he is a former president of its board).

“We wanted to pick four different charities, and also try to hit folks who are active in our part of town,” Little says.
