For a time, Johar Saran was at the head of one of the largest prescription drug rings in the country. He claimed to own 22 pharmacies in the Dallas area, under cover of which he ordered tremendous quantities of in-demand prescription drugs (codeine cough syrup, for one) then used the…
A capital murder warrant has been issued for Abey Bilette Girma, 37, in the killing of the owners of Desta, an Ethiopian restaurant, at around midnight on Aug. 15. Yayehyirad Lemma and Yenenesh Desta were gunned down on the front porch of their home on Marquita Street after closing the…
Last night it most of the north and east parts of Dallas and the Park Cities; tonight it’s everywhere else. County Judge Clay Jenkins and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings held a press conference at the Dallas County Administration building this afternoon to lay out their plans to murder every single…
Zan Holmes Jr. arrived in Dallas in 1956 to study theology at SMU. He had been here a week, living in a one-room flat in South Dallas, when he heard a car crash on nearby Central Expressway. An ambulance and police cars beat him to the scene, but the white…
On Tuesday, you saw a glimpse of Dallas’ garbage future. The city’s long-term solid waste plan had some relatively progressive ideas — mandatory recycling, a plastic bag ban and “zero waste,” for example — but those won’t even be up for actual discussion for another couple of decades. Once the…
Market seers think Dallas-based Energy Future Holdings, which owns the state’s biggest power generating assets, might be engaging in a little prebankruptcy housekeeping. The latest sign? It’s repayment of an inter-company loan. Energy Future isn’t a single, vertically integrated giant like it was when it was known as TXU. It’s…
Just after 8 o’clock this morning, I was riding to work, as I always do, along the Sante Fe Trail. I’d just passed Woodrow and was riding along the fields at Randall Park when I heard pop, pop on my left. It sounded like when a squirrel drops a half-eaten…
Google “Oak Farms reward” and you’ll get a lot of hits, recent news articles mostly with headlines like “Oak Farms offers $10,000 reward in murder of Arlington couple,” “Reward offered in hairdresser’s murder,” “Oak Farms Dairy offers reward in DART retiree murder.” Most recently, it was $10,000 for the arrest…
In the heady days of early 2007, then-Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks added another major sports franchise to his portfolio with the £435 million purchase of Liverpool F.C. He and his partner, George Gillett, promised to deliver grand things, first-and-foremost a brand-new stadium, but what they did…
The North Texas Tollway Authority has made headlines of late for slapping outrageous fees on civilians and veterans alike, publicly shaming them, then threatening to sue and boot their cars. But really, the agency wants you to know, it’s not the bogeyman some people make it out to be. It’s…
Actually, JCPenney is being sued for “tortious interference,” as its competitor Macy’s tries to stop Martha Stewart Living from setting up shop anywhere at all besides Macy’s. The lawsuit, filed today, puts a crimp in JCPenney’s plan to create “mini Martha Stewart stores” inside its locations. Penney’s Chief Executive Officer…
A new report submitted to the Texas Legislature says that Texans who earn their bachelor’s degrees in the humanities have higher levels of debt and lower earning potential than people who get degrees in math and science-related fields. In 2010, the majors with the highest rates of unemployment were humanities…
First, a word of caution. If someone cold-calls you, says they’re a police officer, then asks you to withdraw a large some of cash from the bank so they can see if it’s counterfeit, don’t do it. Chances are, they’re not actually a cop and you’re never going to find…
Outside Cowboys Stadium, near entrance E, is a black, marble bench. As things that are black and marble tend to do, the bench gets hot when exposed to the summer sun. Jennelle Carrillo says she discovered this the hard way when, on August 10, 2010, she sat down to wait…
Four years ago, Cheri was on a parking shuttle at DFW Airport on her way home after a long trip to New York. The shuttle was operated by The Parking Spot, which seems irrelevant but is important to the story, probably more so than it should be. Anyways, the driver…
Update at 11:45 a.m.: Never mind. Police just retracted the $10,000 reward. “Detectives are working on potential information,” they said via news release, which I assume means they have a possible lead. Original post: Police still don’t know who shot 40-year-old Yayehyirad Lemma and 31-year-old Yenenesh Desta on the front…
Both my parents went to SMU, and I even went to a few sporting events growing up. But I claim total ignorance of SMU’s apparently proud tailgating tradition. Er, I mean Boulevarding tradition. Either way, the school does it well, according to Southern Living, which ranked SMU as one of…
Zahed Lateef was a born entrepreneur. His family emigrated to the United States from India as a kid, and he was soon hard at work. He established a lawn-mowing business when he was 11 then, after graduating from high school a year early, launched a company that bought and sold…
In March, with the U.S. playing El Salvador for a spot in the London Olympics, Brek Shea coughed up the ball late in the game, setting up a game-tying goal that cost his team a trip to London. He wasn’t called back up to the national team, marking, as Greg…
Ryszard Stroynowski sat bathed in the pale glow of his laptop screen. At 2 in the morning of Independence Day, as the final, fugitive firecracker reports of the night crackled across a sleeping Dallas, the 65-year-old physicist was wide awake. As he watched the live broadcast in his pajamas, his…
Bad things began to happen to Terrence Hill around this time last year. His troubles began when he went to move into a new apartment but was instead given a totally different unit, one with broken air conditioning. His bad week, he says, escalated from there. By 7:30 a.m. on…
University of Texas prof Chip Groat’s ties to the natural gas industry raised a few eyebrows last month after a report he served as lead researcher on gave the hydraulic fracturing process a clean bill of health. “New Study Shows No Evidence of Groundwater Contamination from Hydraulic Fracturing,” the accompanying…
