While some people deal with their problems by downing a bottle of scotch, The Man in the Chair pulls out a record and listens to his favorite musical when he feels “blue.” That’s the premise of The Drowsy Chaperone, a musical spoof of Jazz Age-era musicals that appeared on Broadway in 2006. From the time the mousy, agoraphobic Man in the Chair touches the needle to the album, he and the audience are transported into the world of Janet Van De Graaf, a showgirl who is ready to say goodbye to all the glitz and glamour, settle down and get married. The show-within-the-show features dream sequences, mistaken identities, an unflappable English butler and a drowsy (drunk) chaperone. You’ll find yourself up to your armpits in song and dance–“Show Off” and “Love is Always Lovely in the End” are our personal favorites. The show opens 7:30 p.m. Monday at Theatre Three, 2800 Routh St., Suite 168, with additional showings through January 8. Tickets are $10 to $40. Call 214-871-3300 or visit theatre3dallas.com.
