Nothing in the music business is sacred anymore–if anything ever was–including Queen’s greatest hits. Singer Freddie Mercury’s doppelganger, an English bloke named plain ol’ Gary Mullen, has crafted a career belting Queen classics backed by Mullen’s band, The Works. Mercury must be rolling over his in grave. The dark-haired Mullen, often bare-chested and encased in tight pants, shimmies around on a stage set straight from the Seventies. According to (the always trustworthy) Wikipedia, Mullen’s schtick, One Night of Queen, has “gained recognition” from our governor Rick Perry, whatever that means. A quick “Rick Perry Queen” Google search only turned up “drama queen” and “government welfare queen” references; alas, nothing about the dear guvna’s affinity for Freddie impersonators. The set list will inevitably cover hits “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen” and “We Will Rock You.” However, no matter how closely Mullen and crew resemble Queen, they’ll always be just a flashy cover band. But there are worse things in life. One Night of Queen is Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Music Hall at Fair Park, 909 First Ave. Tickets are $25 to $70 at ticketmaster.com.
