Growing up, when my folks took me to those “living museums” like Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, I was mesmerized by the glass blowers. I’d stand there for hours watching the guys haul those great piles of melted glass, amazed by the swirls of colors that cooled together. Then, when I was older, I discovered Seattle’s Dale Chihuly, whose enormous glass sea forms are as otherworldly as they are mind-blowing (incidentally, one of his larger sculptures–a vast funnel of orange, swirly ocean shapes–hangs in one of UT Southwestern’s lobbies). If you’re into hand-blown glass, take note: Award-winning local glass blower David Gappa is offering discounted pieces at his annual glass blow-out through August 20 at Vetro Glassblowing Studio & Gallery, 701 S. Main St. in Grapevine. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 5 p.m. For more information call 817-251-1668 or visit vetroartglass.com.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: July 25. Continues through Aug. 20, 2008
