While it might sound like a real go-getter’s guide to the art of self-love, the book Do You! is actually a how-to for something much more valuable: how to, paraphrasing the press materials from Barnes & Noble, realize your dreams and achieve personal success. That may sound pretty dang geeky (almost as geeky as the word “dang”), but you have to realize Do You!‘s author is none other than Russell Simmons, one of the fathers of hip-hop (and therefore one of the fathers of modern American culture, but that’s another book, another time), who did himself all right, rising from the crappy streets of Queens to create Def Jam Records, Phat Farm and the Def Comedy Jam…making a gazillion dollars along the way.
Of late, Simmons has made it his mission to foster economic education and empowerment among minority youth. He’s made the topic as sexy as possible, employing Paul Wall and many others to spread the gospel of financial stability as the best route to empowerment. Follow the tenets of Do You!, which Simmons will talk about 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Barnes & Noble, 616 Preston Royal Shopping Center, and you just might get your hands on enough cash money to never have to worry about self-love again.
