There are two types of people in this world: People who have opinions and people who write Metro columns for the Dallas Morning News. OK, that’s not entirely fair, as Jacquielynn Floyd knows how to deliver a cogent point even if her commentary is about as middle-of-the-road as a Train single. Still, she might as well be H.L. Mencken compared to the inimitable Steve Blow, her Belo buddy whose Metro columns seeth with soft, middle-aged complacency. Columnists should love Dallas, a big mess of a city run by a strange and slippery political elite. And yet Blow devotes his valuable B1 real estate to feel-good items or grandfatherly type outrage (his legendarily sad tirade against hip-hop won’t soon be forgotten) that are continually, stubbornly, conveniently and intentionally irrelevant to what makes and breaks this city. Catch a Steve Blow talk sponsored by the Friends of Irving Public Library at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. Visit onebookoneirving.com.
