The play Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage tells the story of a “feisty rodeo competitor” called Big 8 and a “one-eyed Ukrainian biker named Black Dog,” spoofing the classic Western stylings of author Zane Grey along the way. And if Grey’s name doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps this will—one of his novels gave the Grateful Dead spinoff the New Riders of the Purple Sage their name. No word on whether or not the play features any rowdy stoner country, but one can hope… Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage plays Thursday through October 21 at the John Anthony Theatre at Collin County Community College, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with additional 2:15 p.m. matinees on Sundays. Tickets are $8, $6 for seniors and students.
