Call me a psychic. When I was leaving All My Sons on Monday night, I said to my companion, “I really want to see a good production of A Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” No joke. What should arrive in my inbox this morning, but an announcement from one of the city’s best theater companies that next season includes a production of Eugene O’Neill’s tour de force.
Undermain Theatre announced its 2015-16 season today, which in addition to Long Day’s Journey, includes two world premieres and a regional premiere. You’ll recognize all of the contemporary playwrights from previous Undermain productions. The season opener brings back Meg Miroshnik, the playwright who wrote last season’s hit, Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, with the world world premiere of her new play, The Droll(September 22-October 17, 2015). The season continues with the regional premiere of Conor McPherson’s The Night Alive, which “follows the lives of four modern Dubliners who are trying to get by, helping each other stay one step ahead of the past” (November 17- December 12, 2015).
Then, as we’ve mentioned with excitement, the company will perform A Long Day’s Journey Into Night, with a cast to include Joanna Schellenberg as Mary Tyrone and Bruce DuBose as James Tyrone Sr. This will be a can’t miss production (February 9-March 12, 2016). Finally, the season closes in April with a yet to be announced world premiere show by Undermain staple, Len Jenkin, the author of plays including, Port Twilight, Time in Kafka, and Abraham Zobell’s Home Movie: Final Reel.
