One of the best things about films that aren’t made in Hollywood—and this is particularly true of Asian films—is that literally anything can happen to any of the characters. The result of this freedom can be movies that are intense, breathtaking, brutal and powerful. The Korean movie Oldboy is all of these. The second film in a revenge trilogy, Oldboy tells the story of a man released after being held captive in a small hotel room for 15 years. There is no explanation of why this was done to him and the film follows as he pieces the story together and seeks his revenge. With a powerful storyline, the film takes disturbing and brutal twists, particularly in one infamous scene involving a hammer. Oldboy plays midnight Friday and Saturday at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W.
