It doesn’t sound like there are a lot of perks to being First Lady: the President’s wife can only be passionate about what’s politically correct and has to deal with being called FLOTUS, which sounds an awful lot like some sort of menstrual malady. But one perk that the First Lady does have locked: her wardrobe. Fashion’s top names practically throw themselves at these wives, just hoping their clothes will be worn at an inauguration, a Rose Garden event, or a morning talk show appearance. And for many years, Oscar de la Renta was the FLOTUS fashion favorite, helping everyone from Nancy Reagan to Hillary Clinton to Laura Bush look their most fabulous. De la Renta even designed the wedding dresses of both Jenna and Barbara Bush. It’s no surprise, then, that the George W. Bush Presidential Center, 3001 SMU Boulevard, is home to a retrospective of de la Renta’s work. Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style is a breathtaking look at the fashion icon’s work, featuring 60 pieces from all stages of his career. Included in the exhibition are those aforementioned wedding dresses, plus pieces Laura Bush wore to her husband’s inauguration. View some of de la Renta’s finest pieces starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and running through October 5; the museum is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon until 5 p.m. on Sundays.
