For many of us, Memorial Day is another holiday to take off and grill before the scorching Texas summer comes into full swing. But Carry the Load aims to reassociate Memorial Day with its original purpose, commemorating fallen service members, as opposed to, say, bank holidays or special deals at used car lots. The event is simple and symbolic. Participants walk or run Katy Trail at their own paces, pushing themselves to carry more and go farther than they thought they could, “like the service members they honor,” organizers say. In total, the walk lasts 20 hours and 12 minutes, a self-imposed endurance trial with an optional weighted pack. Donations from sponsors go to several nonprofits, including the Assist the Officer Foundation, Tip of the Spear and Friends of Dallas Fire and Rescue. The opening ceremony takes place in Reverchon Park, 3505 Maple Ave., at 3:30 p.m. Sunday and runs through 3 p.m. Monday. Registration is free.
