Attorney Morris Dees is best-known for creating the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization founded in 1971 to protect civil rights while fighting racism. The center provides free legal counsel to victims of hate crimes and has won several landmark cases against white supremacist groups, which have responded in typically cowardly fashion by repeatedly threatening Dees and the SPLC Headquarters in Montgomery, Alabama (which the Ku Klux Klan actually firebombed in July 1983). Dees tells his inspirational story 7 p.m. Friday at the First Unitarian Church of Dallas, 4015 Normandy Ave. Tickets are $15. Call 214-884-1221 or visit sanderslectures.org.
