Back from a brief hiatus, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary is boasting a power-packed, three-component show. The largest of the three displays, Coincident Disruption, is the work of Dallas artist Eric Eley. In it, Eley examines camouflage through a penetrable screen of hand-designed nettings. The aerial landscape is bold and alluring; it touches on those feelings of danger and safety that accompany concealment. The mixed-media display Transience: Imperfect, Impermanent, Incomplete, is the love child of artists Marilyn Jolly, Melba Northum and Susan Sitzes. Focusing primarily on found or discarded items, the women give them new life and story through rearrangement. Lovers of ecoarts will find a voice in Walter Nelson. In this exhibit, Graffiti on Aspen Trees–Nature vs. Man, Nelson uses his science background (bachelor’s in geology and mammalogy) to explore scarring on the bark of an Aspen tree, an art staple performed by Basque sheepherders in the 1800s. The images that remain (post-mutilation) flip the bark’s colors as it enters a state of decay. The MAC is located at 3120 McKinney Ave. Call 214-953-1212, or visit www.the-mac.org for more information.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Starts: Jan. 14. Continues through Feb. 18, 2012
