Every five years, like clockwork, Woodstock screams back into public consciousness thanks to an anniversary (this time it’s the 40th) and an opportunity to cash in on nostalgia. And while the event was something the likes of which we’ll probably never see again, all the footage of hippies rolling around in the mud gets tiresome when it’s played for merchandising purposes. But there’s an antidote to the flower power flashbacks: Soul Power. This film by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte tells the story of a largely forgotten three-day music festival celebrating and coinciding with “The Rumble in the Jungle,” Foreman and Ali’s legendary 1974 championship fight. James Brown, BB King, Celia Cruz and other prominent African-American musicians were invited to Zaire to share the stage with African artists in a truly creative effort to get back to their roots. The film highlights some of the best moments in this powerhouse festival, which by all accounts was a powerful and transcendent experience for audiences and performers alike. Soul Power plays as part of the Magnolia at the Modern series at the Modern Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St. Showtimes are Friday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., Saturday at 5 p.m., and Sunday at 2 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $8.50.
